Batik is a traditional Indonesian textile dying technique. It originated in Indonesia and was brought to Africa by Dutch colonial powers. The spread of the tradition to other continents helps demonstrate Indonesia’s influence on human culture. It is a great example of globalization and how the sharing of cultures can enriche the world. I have always found interesting how a southeast Asian centuries old tradition could make it’s way to two different continents as a cultural tradition of those places as well. This piece represents my love for my cultural heritage and my family. I used batik, mixed with a Quebecois landscape displaying the relationship between cultures in my family. I grew up with Indonesian batik in my house. Appreciating this form of art has always been a part of my life and I thought: why not make one. This piece, being my first batik, is a great accomplishment for me. I learned a lot through the process, about tools, art and my own culture.
