My project consists of many different forms, such as sewing, photography and graphic design. To me, this project is something that slowly helped me find my motivation to create art again as I’ve grown to believe that creating art was a chore. When I first saw the movie Avatar: The Way of Water by James Cameron it made me want to create art again. I love how whimsical the environment he has created is. I was also inspired by another artist, with whom I have a very personal connection. He is a fashion student. His ambitious nature and his creative mind made me want to work just as hard as he does. This person is none other than my boyfriend, Kyle Bermudez.

A painting of the environment is what started it off. I wanted to challenge myself by branching out into a different art form, one I’ve never done before, designing a dress.
I used baby blue and beige satin, as well as baby blue tulle and had a photoshoot with my friend, Rodney Ayafor (@pretending2berxds on Instagram), to showcase the dress and the theme I chose; which is water and aquatic life.

I did my own research on how to make a dress, but I also had my boyfriend teach me how to use a sewing machine, how to create patterns and designs, as well as telling me about the different structures of the dress and how to make it wearable. I am very grateful to have his guidance and help to be on time for this project. This dress symbolizes the idea of connection; hence the name of the piece “Water Connects All Things”. I created a connection between art forms and the people I worked with, and I couldn’t be happier with the results.
